Cell Creation Rules

Equinox has a number of Cells across the UK that work tirelessly to fulfil the Institute’s ambitions and goals. More information on these can be found at Equinox Cells

Practically, we have not written the background to many of these Cells as we are keen for attendees who are looking to play as a group to create these Cells together and help us in bringing the world of the Equinox Institute to life.

Out-of-Character Cell Creation Requirements

In order to create a group you must:

  • Have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 people booked to attend the same event. We have capped the total number of members to prevent the formation of a super-group prior to the start of any event;
  • Assign someone to act as the Group Leader. This is an out-of-character role and this individual will be responsible for registering the group with the game team. Prior to the game, the game team will liaise with the Group Leader regarding any questions regarding the background of the group and at the event will ensure any items received are provided to them for distribution to the group; and
  • Complete the group creation form including all relevant in-character questions. If this form is not completed then the Cell will not be considered to be formed and will receive no benefits.

Should you need to change group leader for whatever reason, please contact the game team via our official email who will assist you with that.

Cell Creation Rules

As part of the group creation form, you will be required to make some decisions regarding how your Cell operates within Equinox. You will need to:

  • Set out which character is to act as the Cell’s Spokesperson. This is the individual who answers directly to the Court, Equinox’s leadership at an organisational level. This character will be the one to receive instructions from Equinox and will be the one held accountable for any decisions made by the Cell. This is a purely IC role and is separate to the Group Leader role; and
  • Provide a short background for your Cell via the Cell Creation google form. Please be aware of the scope and scale of the game. We will not approve backgrounds that suggest that your Cell has been instrumental in saving the world.

The contents of the form are:

OC:
  • Who is your OC group leader
  • Who is in your Cell? (OC name and email address) – We will email all members of the Cell to confirm that they consent to being a member of the Cell.
Ic:
  • Who is your IC leader aka spokesperson?
  • Who is in your Cell? (IC names)
  • What do other Equinox Cells know about you?
  • What do you as a Cell specialise in?
  • Where in the UK do you operate?
  • How did your Cell form?

Cell Benefits and Classification

The Spokesperson for the Cell will receive a bespoke briefing which is only available to characters within that Cell. This is separate and in addition to the benefits conferred on the group by the Cell’s classification.

Classifications set out what the Cell is most well-known for and what it specialises in. Based on the answers you provide to the IC questions on the Group Creation Form your Cell will be given a customised classification.

This classification will be formatted similar to the examples below:

Field Research Team – Your Cell is trusted by other members of Equinox to take a minor paranatural item out into the field, test its capabilities and record what cost it extracts from the people using it.  You and your spokesperson are entirely responsible for what happens to the item and those around it.

Military Connections – Your Cell has a link with a part of the UK military, this gives you access to some additional starting weaponry/ammo and may make it easier to acquire other heavier military hardware with additional resources.

What if I don’t have Cell?

The Equinox Institute LRP is designed so that it is not necessary to be part of a group in order to play. It should be noted however that one of the core design concepts and objectives of our game is to encourage meaningful roleplay and collaboration between characters in order to achieve success. To that end, if you prefer playing alone or with minimal in-character interaction with others, then we would advise that this game may not be for you

We also understand however that not all attendees have the time or energy to create or manage their own group. To ensure individual players are not left behind, all characters who are not members of a player generated Cell are considered, mechanically for the purposes of the game, to be members of Equinox One – aka the Headquarters of the organisation in London. For more information take a look at Character Backgrounds.

Whether your character is an established member or a consultant with regular ties to Equinox One is left to the individual player but being a member of Equinox One comes with the following benefits:

  • Your character receives a bespoke briefing which is only available to characters who receive instructions from Equinox One.
  • Your character gains two Touchstone Lammies which can be used when interacting with any other characters from Equinox One.
  • Your character gains some additional equipment prior to the start of the game.

Our intention in doing this is to ensure that individual players are not unfairly penalised by not being a member of a group while also ensuring that individual Cells gain benefits which reflect their background and contribution to the game world.

Joining or Leaving a Cell

You may during the course of an event choose to leave your cell, to do this please report to games control.

You may accept an invitation from a cell with space during an event though this will have no mechanical impact until the next event.
